Although GT has no official ‘pre-health track’ or ‘designation’ many of our neuroscience students identify as Pre-Health (pre-doctor, dental, physical therapy, physician’s assistant, nursing, veterinarian, etc.) and work closely with Pre-health Advising to prepare for future health-related careers.
Pre-Health Advising is there to help all majors explore career options in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, public health, and other health professions. Not only does the Pre-Health Advising office offer students support, guidance, and valuable information, but their services are mandatory for the medical school Letter of Evaluation system when you apply to professional school.
The B.S. Neuroscience degree program easily fulfils the pre-med MCAT/school requirements without adding additional hours to student degree requirements or by adding on only 7 additional credits for students whose general free electives are already fulfilled. This is because almost all Pre-Health related courses are either already required by the Neuroscience Degree Requirements or can be used by students when completing their required 15 credit breadth/first minor if students choose the Health & Medical Education (HMED) breadth/minor.
Medical School/MCAT requirement | Neuroscience Degree Requirement | Satisfies HMED Breadth Requirements |
8 hours of Introductory Biology with lab | BIOS 1207+1207L | BIOS 1208+1208L* |
8 hours of General Chemistry with lab | CHEM 1211K | CHEM 1212K* |
8 hours of Organic Chemistry with lab | CHEM 2311 | CHEM 2312 & 2380* |
8 hours of Physics with lab | PHYS 2211 and 2212
8 hours of Calculus | MATH 1551, 1552, and 1553
6 hours of English | ENGL 1101 and 1102 |
The recommended MCAT and medical school courses also fit perfectly within the Neuroscience degree requirements without adding any extra credit hours as these courses can be used to fulfil the remaining 9 credit hours of the HMED Breadth and/or be applied as part of the required 11 credits of Neuroscience Electives.
